The Next Concept HR Association October 2019 Member Spotlight is on…
Regional HR Manager & HR Business Partner
Member Volunteer, HR West Conferences.
Janet Sutherby has been an outstanding Next Concept HR Association member and a volunteer for past HR West Conferences, and we are so glad to have her within our HR community!
What led you to Human Resources as a profession/How did you get into your current role?
I started out as a restaurant manager who was assigned to opening new restaurants. After the successful opening of several restaurants, I discovered my love for talent acquisition and training and development. I transitioned into HR as soon as I had the chance.
I took the position of HR Business Partner for Towne Park when I moved to San Francisco with my husband.
In your opinion, what is the future of HR? How do you see it changing over the next few years, especially in terms of HR innovation?
HR needs to always be evolving and changing with industry. We must stay current with industry trends while reinforcing our foundation of “people first.” HR professionals need to understand and speak the language of business in order to be recognized as key stakeholders.
What do you find is the greatest reward for working in HR?
I love helping people and companies grow. I truly enjoy supporting people through coaching and guidance and then watching them be successful.
What role has Next Concept HR Association played in your career?
It is so rewarding to be part of such a great organization. Next Concept HR offers HR practitioners so many opportunities to learn, grow and network with others. I have taken advantage of many seminars and workshops to keep current with industry trends and California regulations.
What is something people might not know about you?
I love public speaking! Most people avoid speaking in public, but I seek out opportunities to speak. I am currently the President of San Mateo Storytellers which is a local Toastmasters club.
